Northumberland Architects for country houses, listed buildings and estates

Northumberland has a large number of country houses and estates, many of them listed and set in protected landscapes. This is the work we know best: new country houses, the repair and extension of listed houses, and long term plans for estates.

Our recent country house work includes a new Georgian style house in the Howardian Hills, the restoration of Skelton Hall near York, a Queen Anne country house in North Yorkshire and a new Georgian style country house near York. In 2026 we were the only architectural practice in Yorkshire included in House & Garden's The List.

Planning goes to Northumberland County Council or, in the uplands, to the Northumberland National Park Authority. The coast and the North Pennines are National Landscapes, and Hadrian's Wall is a World Heritage Site. As Northumberland architects, we meet the conservation officers on site early and prepare the heritage and planning case before the design is fixed.

On larger projects we visit the site regularly through design and construction, work alongside the estate's own team, and appoint contractors and craftsmen who know the area. If you are looking for Northumberland architects for a country house or estate, or a similar project in County Durham or the Scottish Borders, contact us to arrange a first visit.
