Houses in the Cheshire countryside

Cheshire has some of the finest farmland and estate country in England, with a long tradition of brick farmhouses, timber framed halls and country houses set in parkland. New work in that setting has to respect what is already there. We design new houses, extensions and alterations that sit comfortably beside historic buildings and in open landscape, whether the style is classical, traditional or contemporary.

Clients looking for Cheshire architects usually come to us with larger houses, listed buildings or sensitive sites, where the design and the planning case need equal care. We prepare both, and we talk to planning and conservation officers from the start rather than at the end. You can see more of this work on our country house pages.

Recent work in Cheshire

South of Chester, we have secured planning permission for a substantial extension to a house in open countryside. It adds two bedrooms and reorganises the existing rooms so that the house works better for the family who live there.

In a nearby village, we are the architects for the restoration and extension of a pub that has stood empty for several years. It will reopen as a pub, café and restaurant with guest bedrooms, and give the village back a place to meet.

Listed buildings and conservation

Much of our work involves listed buildings and historic fabric. We have long experience of working with conservation officers, national heritage bodies and specialist craftspeople, and of repairing traditional buildings with the right materials: lime, brick, stone and oak. That knowledge also shapes our new houses, so that they are built to last. More on this approach is on our conservation and heritage page.

Comfortable houses that are cheap to run

We design with a fabric first approach, getting the walls, roof, windows and airtightness right before adding technology, and the practice has Passivhaus design expertise within the team. A traditional or classical house can be warm, quiet and very economical to heat.

Working with a North Yorkshire studio

Our studio is in Malton, North Yorkshire, and we travel to Cheshire regularly for site visits, client meetings and discussions with the council. We take projects from early feasibility through planning and detailed design to completion on site, and we stay involved throughout.
