York Design Awards Double Award-Winner

05 July 2023

We are delighted to be recognised by the York Design Awards for a double award for Skelton Hall in York. The York Design Awards encourage and promote excellence in design and conservation and the award presentation in the Guildhall demonstrates quality and breadth of architectural achievement in York.

Skelton Hall is a Grade-II listed building of significant importance, originally built by the former Lord Mayor of York. We have worked the owners over a number of years to sensitively repair and extend the property to make it fit for modern family life. Working closely with York City Council Planning Department we carefully reinstated the lost staircase in its original location, unlocking a series of existing rooms to return to the original plan form as it was conceived in 1808.

The project was awarded in the category of Single Dwelling and the John Shannon Conservation Award, the judges commended.

"The first conservation award goes to a project which exemplifies excellence in conservation practice. All aspects of work have been carried out with skill and meticulous attention to detail. Each stage of work has been informed by a deep understanding of the building and its changes over time. What is known to be of value has been drawn out in the process, and the results show how a historic home can be patiently and lovingly brought back to life to serve this and future generations."

The project was completed over a number of phases and we would like to acknowledge the skill and hard work of the various consultants and contractors who worked with us over the years. Particular mention goes to. Paul Thompson Building Contractors, GNR Roofing, The Landscape Agency, Alan Wood and Partners Engineers, Plaskitt and Plaskitt, Houghtons of York, Biker Bespoke, Chapel Kitchens & Pinnacle Conservation

We would also like to give thanks to the judges, City of York Council, York Civic Trust and York Conservation Trust who helped to make the award night a success and for their time spent visiting shortlisted properties.

As architects and heritage architects based in North Yorkshire we are working on a number of listed buildings in York, Harrogate, Malton and the North York Moors. We have extensive experience of working with local authority conservation teams and heritage bodies to conserve and sensitively adapt historic buildings.
