Contemporary family home design in Harrogate

This new family home in Harrogate is clearly a distinctive and contemporary design. As with all such proposals, it will, and has, raised issues of subjective taste. Recommended for approval by Harrogate Council, the scheme was refused by committee, but won on appeal. The Planning Inspector praised the unique and contemporary design, stating that the modern design would make a positive contribution to the area.

The context is one of a mixed suburban setting, characterised by individual buildings, of a variety of forms and materials. Stone and render are used for the walling, which accurately reflect local tradition. The dark grey zinc roof similarly reflects the tone of surrounding dwellings. It is rare that a private client commissions such a positive approach to design and quality, and it is hoped that the resulting design makes a notable contribution to the architectural character of the town. It is a serious, considered response to both national and local planning policies, whilst providing an exciting home to enjoy.
