Plaskitt and Plaskitt

In the heart of York city centre, Plaskitt and Plaskitt are a luxury interiors house with over 30 years experience. Founded by Joy and Peter Plaskitt, the team is now made up of three interior designers, Claire, Lucinda and Rosie, and Sophie, showroom co-ordinator.

We visited on a Friday in August ; stepping from the chaos of a bustling city into the sanctuary of calm that is the Plaskitt and Plaskitt showroom. Walls of luxury fabric samples, sumptuous upholstered furniture and stunning light fittings all epitomise the attention to detail and overall beauty in Plaskitt and Plaskitt’s approach. The three designers have a keen eye for their work. Whilst they, like everyone, have their own tastes and styles, what they are most passionate about is delivering the perfect outcome for each customer ; recognising and embracing a clients own sense of style and taste rather than delivering one defined Plaskitt and Plaskitt “look”. Like us, they recognise that good design and architecture is not about delivering a one size fits all package, but fostering a working relationship as a foundation to navigate the endless options available.

Having taken over the business in 2010, Claire speaks to us about the value of drawing on the Plaskitt’s experience. Lucinda recalls with great warmth the wisdom imparted by Joy Plaskitt ; giving the example of curtain calculations, something so vital to providing an interiors service but not cover in an interior architecture degree. These designers work together to draw on a combined lived experience, delivering an exceptional quality of service.

Whilst the design house are happy to do window dressing and soft furnishings only, they love nothing more than taking on a project from the ground up. They reiterate the joy of being involved from the start, in order to help plan the details such as socket location, light fittings, and radiators, delivering a home that maximises both functionality and aesthetics. Additionally by having these details agreed early in the process of a renovation or new build, all tradesmen know the finish they are aiming for, limiting the need to “upset” work previously finished. They have well established working relationships with a number of businesses, including kitchen fitters and cabinet makers, again to have confidence in providing the highest level of service.

Completed in September 2022, we worked together on Skelton Hall, a significant Grade II listed country house on the edge of York. Skelton Hall was an incredibly rewarding project, spanning a number of years due to the Covid pandemic. The project is a stunning example of work from both teams, and how seamlessly the disciplines can work together. Plaskitt and Plaskitt played a pivotal role in the interior detailing and finishings of this, without which the house would not be seen now in such grandeur.

Recognised by both businesses, the number of decisions required in any house project can be overwhelming, and ultimately working with a good interior designer can make the process much easier.
