Located in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, this former cow byre was rescued from near dereliction and lovingly converted to provide luxurious boutique holiday accommodation in the heart of Farndale's renowned daffodil country.
The conversion sits at the intersection of heritage conservation, rural architecture, and adaptive reuse. There is a real sense of authenticity throughout—the building feels solid and grounded in its environment, supported by a refined interior that is both timeless and true to the humble agricultural origins of the structure.
Vaulted ceilings in the principal rooms create a dramatic sense of light and volume, whilst the cosy sitting room, with its traditional woodburner, provides an intimate retreat for quieter moments. The careful balance between grandeur and intimacy makes this an exceptional place to experience the rhythms of moorland life.
The building has been sympathetically repaired with new hot-lime mortar and internally insulated with breathable hot-lime plaster. Limecrete underfloor heating provides a stable, gentle heat source that works in harmony with the natural breathable qualities of the traditional building materials, ensuring comfort without compromising the building's integrity. The project won the LABC Yorkshire Award for Best Commercial Conversion in 2024. The property is available to rent through Farndale Cottages.
